VPN Bonding Explained

Bonded VPN solutions are for organisation’s that want to improve Internet communication between their office sites, enhance their bandwidth and improve the connection reliability of their Virtual Private Network (VPN).

What is Bonded VPN?

VPNs are often used by organisations to ‘link’ together their branch offices to enable authorised users to share the organisation’s private information over a public infrastructure, such as the Internet. However, the information/data sent across the VPN is still kept private as it is encrypted to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organisation’s network.

As VPN’s use the Internet to send and receive data between offices, the speed is determined by the available Internet connection. With a Bonded VPN an organisation has the ability to use multiple Internet connections for exactly the same purpose. But the advantage is with combined Internet connections, an organisation has faster Internet speed and therefore a faster VPN to send and receive data.

Who is Bonded VPN for?

Bonded VPN’s are particularly useful for organisations that require a faster VPN to communicate with other branches or remote workers that have access to their VPN. In addition to faster download speeds from the combined bandwidth of multiple Internet connections, the organisation will also benefit from higher upload speeds. Higher upload speeds can only be achieved with a Bonded VPN solution and this is extremely beneficial when sending data. Faster uploads and downloads achieve quicker communication between offices and higher bandwidths improve the quality of any audio/visual communication.

Due to the fact that VPNs are created with a single Internet connection means if the Internet connection fails then an organisation loses access to their VPN. The bandwidth available from the single Internet connection also limits the speed and quality of communication between branch sites and head offices. With Bonded VPN, the VPN is not affected by the loss of a single Internet connection as there are other Internet connections also available at the same time.

A Bonded VPN solution is also used as an alternative to leased line networks, point to point connections or simply leased line internet access. Where leased lines are usually expensive and can only be used by one organisation, A Bonded VPN solution can provide the same capabilities, but at a much lower cost.

How does Bonded VPN work?

Bonded VPN is achieved through specific Bonded VPN hardware technology (Load Balancers). Bonded VPN involves installing a hardware unit at the required organisation site(s) in order to increase their Internet and VPN connection reliability and bandwidth to improve overall communication. If an Internet connection fails then data can be distributed through another available Internet connection so the connection will remain established thus reducing impact on the user. VPNs are also made considerably more secure as data travels over multiple Internet connections.
