Bonded ADSL Explained

A Bonded ADSL solution allows multiple ADSL connections to be physically bonded and used as a faster single connection to the Internet maximising the potential for download and upload speeds. Bonded ADSL is also sometimes referred to as Bonded DSL, DSL Bonding, ADSL Bonding, and ISP Bonding.

What is Bonded ADSL?

In addition to slow download speeds, some organisations with a Broadband Internet connection may also be restricted to an even slower speed for uploading. However, with a Bonded ADSL solution organisations can achieve both higher download and upload speeds instantly.

Bonded ADSL is the ability to combine 2 or more Internet connections and utilise them as a single connection to gain the benefit of increased bandwidth speed for both Internet downloads and uploads.

Example: 3 X 8Mbps ISP connections would provide 24Mbps of bandwidth thus achieving bandwidth speed equal to the sum of the separate connections.

Bonded ADSL can also be achieved using ISP connections with different speed.

Example: 2 X 8Mbps ISP connection and 1 X 4Mbps ISP connection would achieve a total bandwidth speed of 20Mbps.

Who is Bonded ADSL for?

Bonded ADSL is for those organisations that require high levels of bandwidth capacity and instant high speed Internet. Bonded ADSL is particularly useful for businesses that frequently upload large files from key sites (e.g. head offices) or use applications such as VoIP and Video Conferencing that require high upload bandwidth. A standard (ADSL) broadband has a higher download speed (e.g. 2Mbps) than upload (usually 256k) which limits the quality of such services.

Organisations are affected by slow upload and download speeds due to the distance of their nearest exchange line, then a Bonded ADSL would help achieve higher speeds and reduce the limitations of their current ADSL service. It is also ideal for organisations that just want a faster internet service.

Bonded ADSL solution is also a more cost effective alternative to expensive private leased lines and yet is able to offer just as much high bandwidth.

How does Bonded ADSL work?

Bonded ADSL is achieved through specific Bonded Internet hardware technology. This can consist of either one unit at the end user’s site or another option is to use 2 units - one of which is at the end user’s site and the other at the ISP site. The hardware unit combines all the Internet connection to increase bandwidth speed. In both scenarios the units are configured to route traffic down each of the Internet connections and on to the ISP network and Internet. This creates a single virtual link which can be connected to the customer’s firewalland enables organisations to benefit from faster upload and download speeds than previously.
